Newsletter November 2005

Dear Wine Friend, This year we should start the newsletter with the most important item on the agenda – Our Customers. Without your loyal support every year Laibach would not have been such a huge success. As many of you would know we also export our wines, but we are proud to say that every year since Laibach produced its first wines in 1997 our local market has increased. It is a big honour for us to know that more and more wine lovers prefer Laibach and love to enjoy our wines. The 2005 harvest was a long and tough vintage which started quickly and then nearly refused to end. In general the harvest started off hot and very dry, but luckily some rain fell just before harvest. Being blessed with some of the World’s best wine/grape soils we did not need any irrigation on any of our blocks. Not the easiest of year for whites and a great deal of experience was needed to still produce our typical Laibach white wines. The white wines on our tasting list of the 2005 vintage are our Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and then of course who can resist our Natural Sweet Wine made of 100% Chenin Blanc? We kept the style exactly the same than previous years. Why change something if it is perfect and just what our customers enjoy. On the red wine side we had to content with bigger berries and greener stems than previous years. Luckily we were prepared and had the luxury of a new vibrating sorting table, we sorted all berries by hand and removed any green unwanted stems. The results were very good and the wines show great structure backed up by elegance and good balance. At the Veritas Young Wine Show we were rewarded gold medals for our Pinotage and Petit Verdot, while our Cabernet Sauvignon was selection as the National Champion as well as the best red wine for the Stellenbosch region. We are selling at the moment our 2003 Merlot, which received a Gold Medal at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards in 2004 and this year, got a four star rating in Wine Magazine – October 2005 issue. No need to tell you at R60 / bottle this is great value for money. A message to all the passengers of SAA, our 2003 Cabernet Franc and 2004 Merlot have been selected SAA’s 2006 Wine List and will be served in First & Business Class. This year we saved the best for last……… Our organic wine called The Ladybird was for the second year in a row our best seller in South Africa. This is a soft blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon which is irresistible. Once you tried it you will be hooked. This wine was selected by Wine of The Month Club as top Organic wine for the year 2005 and will be sold to their customers during early 2006. So no need to explain if you would still like to buy some 2004 from the farm hurry up! This wine is a huge success and we are busy converting more vineyards to organic, but these things take time. We hope to see you at Laibach soon and wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Wine year. Mike, Francois, Stefan, Anel and the Laibach Family.
